Recycling must be pre-sorted into the following categories:

  1. Corrugated cardboard

  2. Non-cardboard paper (white office paper, newspapers)

  3. Plastics #1 & #2

  4. Metals

  5. Glass (all colors)

  • All boxes must be flattened/broken down

  • No items smaller than a business card (they cannot be machine-sorted under a certain size)

  • No plastic grocery bags

  • No waxy-cartons (like milk-cartons, broth containers, etc.)

  • No shredded paper (it’s too small)

  • No junk mail (coated in plastic)

  • No books

Why we sort?

We require recyclables to be sorted into categories because:

  • Each type of recyclable goes to a different end recycling plant or mill

  • Improves the recycling rate drastically

  • Reduces contamination dramatically

  • Reduces transportation emissions — by sorting our recyclables and removing contamination, we can often bypass trips to unnecessary sorting facilities or transfer stations
